Willow Fire & Security Ltd recently completed mechanical AOV fan panel remedial work in East London after a fault was identified on the system. Our engineers investigated the issue, replaced the fan panel interface unit and cleared the reported fault.

Mechanical smoke ventilation systems play an important role in helping to control smoke within communal areas and escape routes. A fault at the fan control interface can affect communication between connected systems, so prompt investigation and suitable remedial work are essential.

Mechanical AOV Fan Panel Fault Investigation

During this East London visit, our engineers inspected the relevant control equipment and carried out electrical checks within the mechanical AOV fan panel. The investigation focused on the interface responsible for signalling between the fire alarm controls and the smoke ventilation equipment.

The work carried out included:

  • Inspection of the mechanical AOV fan control panel
  • Investigation of the reported interface fault
  • Electrical checks on the associated control equipment
  • Replacement of the fan panel interface unit
  • Clearing the fault indication following the remedial work

Fan Panel Interface Unit Replacement

Following the investigation, the fan panel interface unit was replaced. This interface forms part of the link between the fire detection controls and the mechanical smoke ventilation system. Once the replacement work was completed, the fault indication was cleared.

Using an appropriate replacement interface helps restore reliable signalling between the connected control equipment. It also allows the system fault status to be properly monitored and addressed as part of ongoing AOV maintenance.

Why Mechanical AOV Maintenance Matters

Mechanical AOV and smoke ventilation systems need regular inspection and maintenance to help ensure faults are identified before they affect system availability. Problems can develop in control panels, interface units, power supplies, wiring, batteries, fans and other connected equipment.

Typical warning signs can include:

  • General fault indications on the fire alarm or smoke control panel
  • Communication or interface faults
  • Fans failing to operate when commanded
  • Power supply or battery warnings
  • Intermittent or recurring panel faults
  • Controls that do not reset correctly

Investigating these warnings promptly can reduce the risk of an unresolved fault remaining on a life-safety system.
