Following a routine service visit in Croydon, Willow Fire & Security attended site to replace end-of-life standby batteries within a WindowMaster smoke control (AOV) panel.
The existing batteries were safely removed and new 12V sealed lead-acid batteries installed to restore reliable standby power. Charging voltages and panel status indicators were checked, and the system was confirmed fully operational on completion.
Standby batteries are a critical safety component of smoke control and AOV systems, as they allow the system to operate during a mains power failure—often the most likely scenario during a fire. Over time, batteries naturally degrade and can fail without warning, preventing vents from opening when they are needed most. Regular battery replacement ensures the smoke control system remains reliable, compliant with BS EN 12101, and capable of protecting escape routes, residents, and attending fire crews in an emergency.
The smoke control system is now compliant, fault-free, and ready to operate correctly in the event of a mains power failure.
